We have carefully watched air fares between Seattle and Anchorage for over five years. Over the past 12 months, while fares elsewhere in the country have risen, our potential competitor did not raise fares in our target market, except for the standard summer gouging that occurs annually.
Competing carriers that might otherwise consider flying to Anchorage have not because of depressed pricing. However, rumors have swirled for months that Southwest Airlines may begin red-eye service in 2012. Alaska Airlines has kept capacity low in order to maximize load factor, and SW may be tempted to help ease the capacity problem by offering connecting service to their own flight system.
